On April 5th, Vanguard was visited by the poet G.M. Palmer (http://www.gmpalmer.com/), who educated and entertained the students about himself and his poetry (available at amazon.com). In between reading samples of his work, he answered many questions from the students. He interested students with his explanations of both the artistic and practical, on Greek mythology and the ways of getting your writing published.

As a part of Black History Month, on Friday, February 22nd, Vanguard students heard Dr. Richard C. Harris speak out against racial bias. The author of “One Nation Under Curse” (http://www.amazon.com/Nation-Under-Curse-Richard-Harris/dp/1935529072 ) informs about his years as a member of the Ku Klux Klan. Dr. Harris ran the largest underground terrorist organization in the Mid-west in the mid to late 1970s and educated and informed the students about the lessons he learned about racism, bigotry and prejudice and how he has come to acceptance, love, and tolerance. Describing the journey from white supremacist to co-pastor of an all black congregation, students were interested in what he had to say. Dr. Harris answered many questions that the students and faculty asked and kept them enthralled for hours. More information on this speaker is available at http://www.richardharrisonline.com/ .
