Mr. Graves began his career in education 30 years ago, as an Upper School English teacher and basketball coach in Cincinnati, Ohio. Since then, he has served as an English Teacher, Director of Residential Life, Lower and Middle School Principal (Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Big Island, Hawaii), Upper School Principal, and Assistant Head of School (Admiral Farragut Academy, St. Petersburg, Florida) and Head of School at Island School on Kauai, Hawaii 2015-2020. He served on the Hawaii Association of Independent School Board of Directors from 2016-2020. He was appointed by the Board of Trustees as Head of School at The Vanguard School in 2020. His family includes his wife Maria and children Sara (English/Reading Teacher), Joshua (College Student, Arizona State University '24), and Koa (Vanguard '27). In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, golfing, reading, and watching Xavier basketball and Tampa Bay Lightning hockey. He earned his M. Ed Administration at Xavier University, as well as his English Teaching Certification, and his B.A from Morehead State University Communications, Journalism.

This is Dr. Allen's 15th year in education. As the grades 6-12 Principal, Academic/Residential Director it is his responsibility to provide leadership in the areas of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and planning. Also, in his current role at The Vanguard School, he is responsible for overseeing all academic and boarding operations. This includes ensuring the school's academic program appropriately aligns with state and accreditation requirements. As a senior level administrator, he works collaboratively with the administration team to create school-wide goals and objectives related to student learning in order to encourage the growth and success of our students. He has his undergraduate degree in Health Science Education, completed his Graduate studies in Biomedical Engineering, and a Doctorate of Education. He is an alum of The University of Florida. He maintains teaching certificates with endorsements in various grade levels and subject areas including Exceptional Student Education K-12. He enjoys ALL things Florida Gators, food, watching movies, listening to music, live music, and the beach/ocean.

As the new CFO, Tim Knavel comes to the Vanguard School after a long career in collegiate athletics as the Business Manager/CFO, which covered stops at various institutions, including Austin Peay State University, Ohio University and Towson University. Tim has a BBA in Accounting from Niagara University and a Masters in Human Resources Development from Towson University. Tim and his wife Lori have 3 children and recently moved to Florida to be close to family. Tim & Lori also welcomed their first grandchild into the blend in 2022, a baby boy. Tim is an avid sports fan and enjoys the outdoors.

Peter Konneh has dedicated nearly 18 years to the mental healthcare profession. Previously he worked at a hospital with individuals who endured sexual assault, domestic violence, substance abuse, depression, and provided mental health rehabilitation for trauma survivors. He enjoys working with children and families and his approach is evidence-based therapy and he has training in cognitive based theory, trauma focus therapy, solution focused and emotional focus therapy. After completing a Bachelor’s in Human Services from Springfield College and a dual Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling from Cambridge College, Konneh is now pursuing a Doctorate in Community Care Counseling with a concentration in trauma at Liberty University. Musically gifted, Konneh spends his free time playing various instruments at churches. He has also lectured at college classes and served as a mentor. Konneh is a first-generation immigrant who resides in Florida with his wife and 2 children.

Hannah Bell, our Development/Marketing Associate, obtained her B.A in Communication with a minor in Marketing from Warner University. Hannah is a part of our residential department and lives in Sabbagh Hall. She is originally from O’Fallon, Illinois, and has also lived in Cincinnati, Ohio during part of her college experience. While in college, she completed an internship at the Lake Wales Care Center and played on the volleyball team. He teaches Digital Imaging, Graphic Design, and Introduction to Technology. When he is not in the classroom. you’ll see him coaching Archery, Cross Country, and J.V. Basketball. He also tutors students in the residential program. You might even spot him taking photos on campus for the Yearbook Club, which he advises. Mr. Fant attended George Mason University and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Visual Technology. When he gets some free time, you can find him by the ocean or in the woods. Cindy graduated from Webber International University in 2023 with a bachelor’s in General Business. Cindy has set her sights on pursuing a Master’s degree in the future. From an early age, Cindy demonstrated an exceptional passion for volleyball. Her discipline and leadership fueled her relentless pursuit of excellence, leading her to compete at the highest levels in her home country and allowing her to compete for academic scholarships in the States for the last five years. Beyond her athletic achievements, Cindy brings a wealth of cultural diversity to Vanguard. Having lived and competed in different countries, she has developed a deep appreciation for different cultures, and the ability to bridge cultural gaps. She aims to foster an inclusive environment where people around her can learn from one another’s unique experiences. In addition to teaching the high school sciences, he is also a head coach for our swim team. He graduated from Wilmington University, located in New Castle, Delaware, where he received his degree in Science Education with a Social Science Minor. When not in the classroom, he enjoys exercise, art, and spending time with his wonderful wife and their dog. In addition, he also likes to consider himself a student, in the sense that he finds enjoyment and fascination in perusing and learning new things as often as he can! Usually, you can find him listening to lectures from his favorite intellectuals discussing disciplines such as Sociology, Theoretical Physics, and Evolutionary Biology.

Rebecca Venable is a seasoned classroom teacher beginning her seventh year at Vanguard (and seventeenth in education). Miss Cheri (Tysver) first came to The Vanguard School in 2012 as a volunteer to help with our holiday production. Having earned her B.A. in Music (Voice) at F.S.U. and subsequently working in the musical theatre field for 17 years, she thought “piece of cake”. She admits the task was far more challenging but also very fulfilling. She, the Drama teacher and the students worked together for two weeks and their hard work paid off. The performance was a success. The kids were beaming and the joy and pride were contagious! Through that experience she realized that Vanguard was an exceptional school where developing students’ individual strengths were key in creating a very unique learning environment. Miss Cheri has taught many subjects both academic and elective since and has enjoyed learning along with the kids. Though she agrees that education is so important, she feels the connections made here at Vanguard are the true magic! The trust and mutual caring shared have made Vanguard a second home for her. She is so proud to be part of a community that creates a safe and positive environment, one that nurtures individual confidence and growth. When she sees and feels the joy in a student, once riddled with anxiety, who accomplishes what they never thought possible, it reinforces her purpose. When students reach their goals in this small setting, she has witnessed the courage it provides for their future endeavors! This is Mrs. Crump’s 6th year at Vanguard and she is currently teaching MS math & Algebra I. In previous years at Vanguard, she has served as the ACT Test Administrator and Special Ed. Coordinator. She has been teaching for more than 30 years in Special Education. She taught her first 5 years in public school ESE (working with legally and totally blind students) and has taught in private school settings for the rest of her career. Her experience also includes previously serving as Dept. Chair & the Special Ed.Coordinator at Lakeland Christian School. She enjoys working with students that need a little extra care with some specific strategies to assist in their learning. In her personal life, she enjoys spending time with family and exploring various small Florida towns with her husband searching for collectible antiques.

Dr. Dawn Barnes oversees our infirmary and works closely with our nurses and Mrs. Pizarro. Dr. Barnes earned her BSN from the University of Florida, her Master's in Family Health Nursing and Oncology, and her Doctorate in Nursing Practice, Residency, Endocrinology from the University of South Florida. She joins us through our partnership with Heartland Counseling Center, where we have had a longstanding relationship with Dr. Robert Allison, Jr. She has extensive experience in Family Practice/Endocrinology in Florida.

Cory graduated from High Point University in 2006 with a bachelors in science. She is married to her husband who she met in college at HPU and has 2 daughters, ages 8 and 11. Cory is from North Carolina, but moved to Lake Wales, Florida in 2010 where her husband is from. She loves to exercise, fish, and hang on the boat or at the beach. Her family also loves to hike, camp, and pretty much do anything that is active. She also has a love for art and loves to paint and sketch.

Breanna Wilson is a member of the infirmary staff working as a medical assistant. Breanna is also a residential advisor living in West Hall. She is originally from Lake Wales and even graduated from Lake Wales High School through the IB Program. Breanna is currently pursuing her Bachelor's Degree in Health Science at Polk State College. She is also a trained lifeguard and lifeguard instructor during the summer. Breanna's favorite hobbies are going to the beach and going to the gym.

Sabrina grew up in Alaska and moved to Florida in 2019. Spending her formative years on a horse farm, she always enjoyed seeing how horses can help people. She served as a youth group leader for 5 years and likes working with teenagers. Sabrina enjoys making therapy experiential, hands-on, and applicable to everyday life.

Beginning her academic career at Ecola Bible college in Cannon Beach, Oregon where she received certificates in Biblical studies. She then earned her Bachelor's and Master's of science in counseling, with an additional focus in Biblical/theological studies, from Clarks Summit University, Pennsylvania. Equipping Sabrina to provide Biblical counseling to clients who desire it. Her Master's studies included a student internship at the Center for Change in Orem, Utah. The Center for Change provided extensive experience in treating, managing, and assessing eating disorders. Also, certified as an Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning, through PATH international, Sabrina has facilitated equine-assisted therapy for nearly five years. She finds, and is passionate about, incorporating horses into the counseling process to promote healing.

Dr. Allison received his education out West obtaining his Master’s of the Arts and Doctorate in the area of Clinical Psychology at Midwestern University. Dr. Allison has worked with general therapy clients including Psychological and Neuropsychology assessments as well as working with Community Healthcare and Crisis facilities.

For over 20 years at Vanguard, Wendy Warman, M.S. Certified Speech-Language Pathologist, has had the privilege of working with students who will benefit from highly individualized programs for social and pragmatic communication skills and executive function training. Wendy highlights that an important part of the success of her individualized programs is collaborating with the team at Vanguard. It brings her tremendous joy to watch her students improve and grow in these important skills that will help them be successful in their personal and career life. In addition to providing services to Vanguard students, through her company SmarTalkers, Wendy provides public speaking training and executive speech coaching for professionals including Fortune 500 companies. She is co-author of the book, Loud and Clear: How to Prepare and Deliver Effective Business and Technical Presentations which has sold over a quarter of a million copies. Wendy graduated from the University of South Florida with a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Prior to moving to Lake Wales, she had a private practice in Pinellas County. With her husband Bill, Wendy enjoys traveling, canoeing, and hiking.
